Add Inside Out to your Mental Wealth plan

Pixar did us all a favor by designing, animating and producing the movie ‘Inside Out’.  The film is educational and entertaining in just the right balance.  (See August 11, 2024 New York Times article How Pixar Helped Change Therapy).  I was delighted to read the article in The Times to see how therapists are using the movie to educate young people.  We all need a refresh on how our brain works – this movie is a good anatomy lesson along with teaching us things about the brain that we would find in a brain owners manual – which few of us have read!

So, I’m hoping you have seen the film perhaps with your children and also recommended for date night.   You can both learn more about your reactions to what is happening around you as well as what is going on inside your own head.   We need to be able to use language to explain what we are thinking and how we got “there”.

If you haven’t seen it yet, quit reading this blog post and watch the movie.  If you have seen it, watch it again.  This one is a keeper for explaining how we think, why we feel what we do and how to give language to the complex way we explain what is happening to us emotionally and relationally. In the article the author, Melena Ryzik, advocates that “Inside Out helps families have those conversations together to embrace our personalities in all their shades and shadows.”

The film helps us talk directly to our pain, which is a skill that needs practice, language and appreciation to build insight into our every day experiences.    I’m a fan of this film for many reasons; mainly because I could relate to the characters who occupy the heart and soul of Riley, the person who we now know more about both inside and out.
