Are you living in the same apartment/home/condo that you first moved into together?
Probably not.
We move for many reasons; new jobs, new kids, new income that lets us afford more house. So, we can assume that as a couple you have occasionally moved and upgraded your surroundings.
We also tackle home improvement projects from time to time. We can predict that it is a messy project but in the end, you are generally happy with the results and the effort to upgrade your home.
Think for a moment of your relationship like one of those projects. There is the dream, the trip to the supply store, the work, the mess and finally, the new results.
Couple’s counseling is much like that process of upgrading your home. There is a dream of a better connection, more empathy and appreciation. There is the call to the couple’s therapist to begin work on the relationship. Then comes the work, the practice with new skills, not without trial and error but good intentions… and finally, the new results. When you remodel your relationship by coming to couple’s therapy you will go through a process, sometimes messy, and hopefully achieve a relationship that fits you better, is more workable and can even bring delight because your efforts have created a new way of seeing each other.
I hope you will join me in this effort to remodel your relationship. You will be happy you took on this project!
I think I will add this one to the daily couples devotional I’m writing call Mediations from a Messy House.
